Weekly Analysis #4-1 – Body Piercings

Weekly Analysis #4-1 – Body Piercings

Body piercings have been around for many centuries and have existed in many cultures. Ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Greeks pierced their bodies to show their importance in a group and to ward off evil (Center for young women’s health, 2010).
Today body piercing has become quite popular and no body part in immune from the stab. The piercings may be bars or rings and are made from stainless steel, gold, silver, and titanium. Body piercings now include what is called “mods” or rings used in the ear, nose, and lip areas. It is a type of piercing but it stretches the skin into a large hole. Many times it will include tattoos and scaring.

There are dangers associated with body piercings. For example, the human mouth is a breading ground for many types of bacteria (Indobase Beauty, 2011). When the tongue is pierced, the area becomes an open sore that can invite infection. Piercings may also become infected on the outer surface of the skin, and depending where the piercing is located, the piercing jewelry may catch on objects and tear out of the skin.

When considering how outlandish piercings have become, one can only wonder how far this trend will go. The most outlandish new style of piercing is the see through lip mod. This cute little item allows for the viewing of a persons teeth and gums! You can only hope that the individual wearing this thing will keep their teeth brushed and flossed! It also must be considered before getting an outlandish piercing that someday it may keep the person from attaining employment. In addition, if he or she grows tired of it, it may take surgery to repair the damage.

On another note, there is nothing more appetizing than walking up to the counter of a fast food restaurant and ordering from someone who has an infected face or hand piercing! Yum

Personally, I don't get it?

  1. Wow! I never knew that much about piercings! I never really understood what the big deal is about them, but "to each his own", right? I have five tattoos, which is also a personal preference, and I guess its okay, unless you are fully covered and work a job where they are not acceptable. Mine are in places that can be covered and will not prove a distraction in the workplace. People should always be careful when making the decision to get piercings (or even tattoos for that matter) because you never know when they will conflict with the job you are trying to get or person you are trying to date, or whatever.. Once you get them, there's no turning back.. Great post!

  2. Hi Dave:
Your pictures are astounding, especially the ones with the nose pierceing, but when you think about it in Africa, some of the tribes piercings are just as elloborate and eye opening as their piercings sometimes consisist of putting disk in their entire bottom lip or beautiful multiple beading and very large rings hanging from their ears. I also like the body paintings I have seen of them and their colorful ceremony rituals of feathers, and animal skins. These pictures you have of piercings date back as you have stated centuries. I don't think I could be so brave to get a piercing of such magnitude. Your post was very good...Vivian
